Artist statement:

Watercolor is my favorite medium because it constantly surprises me. It has an illusive quality which can be humbling, frustrating, spontaneous and exciting, sometimes all at once.

Most of my paintings take several days to complete because I work wet-in-wet and the layers take time to dry and evolve. My work starts at the scene, but I finish most paintings in the studio.

I love the transparency and granulation of pigment and the magic of glazing one color over another.  I sometimes add pen and ink, graphite, gouache, pastel, and watercolor pencil to my paintings.

When I paint I strive to capture a sense of place as I have experienced it.  Perhaps my paintings will evoke your own memories of a similar scene.

About me

Picture
I live in Sebastopol, Sonoma County, California, with my husband, Bob.  I have been playing with watercolor for over 20 years.  I also work in a law office and I'm looking forward to retirement and full-time painting in the near future.

Living in Northern California, I don't have to go far to find a beautiful scene to paint. Visitors come from all over the world to enjoy our beautiful coast, the redwoods, wine country and agricultural bounty.  I've also had the pleasure of painting in Paris, New Mexico, Oregon, throughout California and the Sierras.  I especially enjoy painting outdoors, but I am also content to sit with a pen and sketchbook and draw wherever and whatever I see.

I studied watercolor painting with the late Susan Adams for many years, and she was a tremendous influence on me as a teacher and friend.  I have taken workshops with many wonderful artists over the years, including Barbara Nechis, Michael Reardon, Susan Cornelis and Carolyn Lord.  A few of my most inspirational artists include Emily Carr, John Singer Sargent, Matisse, Georgia O'Keeffe, Egon Schiele, Edward Hopper, Lawren Harris, Tom Thomson, David Hockney, and my mother, Elaine Rogers.  I thank my parents for instilling a strong appreciation of landscape and art throughout my life.
